Suitable For

This course is suitable for Learners who wish to improve their communication skills with Deaf people and for anyone who has a basic level of skills and knowledge in BSL.

Course Content

The aim of this course is to encourage development and establish communication skills and fluency in British Sign Language. Units cover a wide variety of topics and sign vocabulary and in - depth knowledge of grammatical content and structures of British Sign Language. Deaf Community and Deaf Culture will also be looked at in depth. There is a strong emphasis for students to have access to, and interaction with, deaf BSL users.

Assessment Method

Assessment will be carried out throughout the course. Learning will be based around group participation in a supportive and encouraging environment but some time will spent with Deaf people outside the classroom. The qualification is divided into 3 Units, each of which can be achieved separately. It is recommended that the content of Unit 201 (Receptive) is covered before Unit 202 (Productive) or 203 (Conversation). To achieve the full Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language, candidates are required to pass all units.

Progression

Successful candidates can progress to Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language and/or Level 3 NVQ in British Sign Language, depending on courses offered by Signature.

Entry Requirements

All learners must have Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. Learners should also study privately at home and/or in the library.
