Description

This degree covers the impact of humans on the natural environment and the resulting changes.

Changes range from local to global in their extent and include problems such as climate change, sea level rise and loss of biodiversity, as well as more localised problems such as waste management, security of water supplies and resource mitigation. You will also study both the geographical patterns of environmental change and the processes that underpin them.

The course offers you the opportunity to study methods of analysis, such as Geographical Information Systems, which are critical to answering geographical questions.

Six core units:

  • Introduction to GIS
  • Introduction to Field Studies
  • Elements of Human Geography
  • Tools of Environmental Analysis
  • Physical Environment
  • Principles of Environmental Management.

Year 2

Five core units and one option unit:

  • Applied GIS
  • Field Trip
  • Applied Environmental Management
  • Principles of Ecology
  • Earth Systems.

Options:

  • The Lifestyle Project
  • Curriculum Plus.

Year 3

Four core units and one option unit:

  • Group Project (double unit)
  • Ocean and Coastal Management
  • Environmental Monitoring and Surveying
  • Global Environmental Change.

Options:

  • Environmental Work-based Learning
  • Dissertation.

Projects/work experience

You will gain experience in field techniques on two compulsory residential field trips: a five-day field trip in the UK in Year 1 and an intensive seven-day field trip in Europe in Year 2. Previous locations have included Turkey, Malta and the Azores Archipelago.
