What you will do in this Course

Throughout the course, you will do the following things:
  • Distinguish between illustrations representing significant indoor plant families, including; Acanthaceae, Araliaceae, Bromeliaceae, Araceae, Euphorbiaceae, Gesneraceae, Marantaceae, Moraceae, Orchidaceae, Arecaceae.
  • Compile a resource information guide on indoor plants, including scope of operation and contact information (ie: address, phone, fax), for; ten nurseries, five societies/clubs, fifteen product suppliers, other organisations.
  • Prepare a collection of at least fifty indoor plants, not collected elsewhere, each including; a photo, drawing or pressed specimen, plant names (scientific and common), cultural details, uses/applications.
  • Describe growing techniques specific to indoor plants, including: Container growing, Potting media, Nutrition, Watering, Pruning.
  • Describe five pests common to indoor plants, in your locality.
  • Describe five diseases common to indoor plants in your locality.
  • Describe five other plant health problems common to indoor plants, your locality, including; nutritional disorders, environmental problems.
  • Survey indoor plants growing in a specific commercial situation to determine: varieties used, problems, potential problems, current cultural practices.
  • Develop a maintenance schedule for indoor plants growing in a specific commercial situation.
  • Develop guidelines for the general growing requirements of three specific plant genera when grown indoors.
  • Prepare a chart listing propagation methods commonly used for ten different indoor plants, from ten different plant families.
  • Develop a checklist for routine inspection of indoor plants to determine the need for work tasks to be undertaken, including; potting up, watering, fertilising, spraying, moving outside.
  • Write an essay about three common problems which occur with indoor plants, which explains causes, identification and treatment of those problems.
  • List ten different plant varieties suitable as foliage plants under air conditioning.
  • List six different plant varieties which will flower for extended periods indoors in a typical home in your locality.
  • List ten different plant varieties which are hardy to low light conditions as indoor plants in your locality
  • Rate thirty different indoor plants from ten different plant families, in terms of tolerance to different limiting factors, including; low light, air-conditioning, stale air.
  • Write a detailed summary of an indoor plant family, which includes details on; distinguishing between significant genera in the family, common cultural practices for that family
  • Monitor the condition of three different plants grown indoors on a weekly basis over a three month period.
  • Compare the suitability of thirty different plant species, for indoor growing, which are normally grown outdoors, including; rainforest trees and shrubs, herbs, cacti, succulents, palms.
  • Select ten different plant species not commonly grown as indoor plants, which have potential to be grownindoors.
  • Evaluate, the performance of one selected plant variety, after growing for one month indoors under unfavourable conditions such as low light, air conditioning or poor ventilation.
  • Explain the use of bonsai plants for indoor display.
  • Explain how to maintain a terrarium as an indoor feature.
  • Create a \'miniature garden\' for use as an indoor feature, which incorporates four or more different plant varieties.
  • Explain the use of hanging baskets as indoor features.
  • List six different items, other than conventional planters or pots, which can be adapted as a decorative container.
  • Plant an indoor plant in something not originally intended as a plant container, but which has been adapted into an aesthetically acceptable growing container.
  • Design an interior plantscape for a domestic or small commercial situation, which utilises five different plant varieties, and specifies; types of containers used, type/s of potting media, estimated installation cost.
  • Explain the nature of the interior plantscaping industry, in your locality.
  • Evaluate the characteristics of a growing structure, such as a greenhouse or shadehouse, being used in the learner\'s locality for growing indoor plants, including; cost, ventilation, temperature control, light control.
  • Specify the minimum facilities required to establish an interior plantscaping business, which would be a viable proposition for the learner, including; shade houses, greenhouses, transport facilities.
  • Summarise three different typical procedures used in the marketing of indoor plants, including; wholesale plant sales, retail plant sales, plant hire.
  • Develop an outline for commercially viable services which could be offered by an interior plantscaping company, including reference to; scope of plants hired, scope of maintenance services offered, cost structure of services.

This is a course equally applicable to the professional interior plantscaper or the home owner (or interior decorator) who aspires to achieve the very best results with their indoor plants. You will learn about the main family groups indoor plants fall into, the cultural requirements and general characteristics of each of those groups, and from there develop the ability to select the right plant for the right situation. Many types of growing methods are covered (in pots, baskets, hydroponics, terrariums, greenhouses), as well as soil mixes, propagation, pest control, feeding and lots more.
