Level: Level 3

The course will deliver opportunities for exploring classic literary texts from novels, to plays to poetry, such as Shakespeare’s Othello and war poetry by Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The course also uses the genre of war literature as a basis for creative writing for the coursework. It will explore how we speak and what influences our language, as well as studying gothic fairy tales by Angela Carter and the classic gothic novel Dracula.

It is vital that you have a desire to read a range of literary and non-fiction texts. To successfully complete this course you will also need to be an enthusiastic writer.

There are opportunities to extend your understanding of the topics through study trips, for example, a student conference on gothic writing or a trip around London on the ghost bus! The course also offers theatre trips to see performances of Shakespeare’s plays as well as more contemporary performances and visits from authors and playwrights.
