Who is the course for?

Mixed Ability: This course does require a basic knowledge of drawing and/or painting.
I will assist students to choose a subject and set up, observing light, angles or architecture. With one to one guidance on basic measuring techniques for sketching practise, shadows and textures inside and outside the cathedral. Colour mixing practise will be advised and support on depicting textures and tones for those wishing to paint.

What is your approach?

The course will start with an initial meeting and guided tour, followed by group discussion, with demonstrations and ideas, students will identify areas or themes they would like to work on and be advised one on one by the tutor. The tutor will give support individually throughout the day. The group will meet up again to discuss progress and ideas and to chat with other students. The tutor will then present new ideas for individuals to follow. In this way the classes can be used by the individual in order to grow in their knowledge or to expand on the skills and interests that they already have.

One to one feedback will be give during the course.
You will review your own progress through the work produced in your sketchbook and portfolio.

What can I do next?

Please bring the medium you are most familiar with, or would like to use for sketching and painting during the day. A basic set of pencils (HB-4B), rubber and good quality paper is a good starting point, you may like to try a small box of Willow Charcoal for tonal drawings.
For those students wishing to work in colour please bring the equipment you feel most comfortable using out and about during the day.

A drawing board (hard surface to draw on),
Suitable clothing and perhaps a blanket or cushion to sit on.
And lunch.
Are there any other costs?
Trained guides at Chichester Cathedral, who suggest a donation of £4.50 per adult, will provide our guided tour (TBC).
