Teaching and learning experience
The programme will be delivered using a variety of techniques
including lectures, seminars, workshops and web based material. A
considerable amount of your learning will take place in the
workplace through the supported tasks and projects we will set for
you. You will study areas such as child development, communication,
language and literacy, inclusion, health, and management issues in
early years. You will be asked to reflect on your own practice,
within the current environment of research and policy and there
will be time for discussion of issues which you may find
challenging in this context.
Resources
You will be provided with a suitably equipped place to work when
attending college, which will include access to specialist staff,
IT facilities and other learning resources which will be
appropriate for the nature of work you will be required to
undertake. Additionally, the College offers a wide range of other
resources and facilities including additional learning support,
which will be available to you, further details of which can found
in the Higher Education Student Handbook.
As well as being enrolled at Banbury and Bicester College you will
also be registered and enrolled with Oxford Brookes University and
so will benefit from the same facilities and services as the on
campus students. These include: use of Brookes’ libraries, Centre
for Sport and Students’ Union, study support and mentoring and
professional advice and information from Brookes’ Career and
Employment Centre.
Study support
If you do not have a recognised disability or specific learning
difficulty, but feel that you require additional support with your
studies, you may be eligible to access some discrete sessions in
one of the following areas:
• Assistive software training
• IT up skilling
• Essay planning and structure
• Proof reading and editing written work
• Bibliographies and referencing
• Time management and personal organisation
• Revision and exam tips
• Presentation techniques
N.B. Your eligibility for any of the above support will be reviewed
with your course tutors and a member of the study support team on
your campus.
The programme has been designed in conjunction with employers and will therefore build on your current experience in an Early Years setting. It reflects a growing interest in the importance of education of very young children, bringing together clear links between theory and practice through underpinning knowledge and practical skills, in a broader environmental context.
Students will normally be in employment and must be able to
continue working in an appropriate setting whilst undertaking the
Foundation Degree programme. Each application will be considered on
an individual basis following the University principle of widening
access to those who might not have the traditional academic entry
criteria to degree level awards. Normally the requirement would
be:
• An appropriate A level or vocational A level
• NVQ Level 3 or other appropriate vocationally related NQF Level 3
qualification
• An advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Early Years or another
appropriate subject
• a current acceptable CRB and Occupational Health clearance
Admission with credit
Applicants with prior certificated or experiential learning may be
admitted with credit for up to a maximum of 120 credits at level
4.
English language
Applicants whose first language is not English must also
demonstrate that their level of English is acceptable, by achieving
a score in a recognised test such as:
• an IELTS score of 6.0 overall
Upon successful completion of the Foundation Degree, graduates
will be able to progress towards a full honours degree (BA Hons) at
Oxford Brookes University or Early Years Professional Status
(EYPS)
A wide range of courses are available at Oxford Brookes for
continued professional development (CPD).
Destination of graduates
As this is a new programme, there are no available destination
statistics, however, it is expected that students will use the
programme to enable them to enter employment in a relevant
specialist area and/or progress onto a university or college that
enables them to ‘top up’ their FdA to a full BA (Hons) degree.
