Who is this course for? If you are looking to gain a GCSE in English and are over 16 and not in Full-Time Education, then this course is perfect for you. A GCSE in English is an essential requirement for many degree and/or teacher training courses and is the standard English language qualification required by colleges and employers. Many people who are returning to education choose to take GCSE English before tackling other subjects. What qualifications or experience do I need ? We welcome: * Recent school leavers with a minimum Grade D in GCSE English or * Mature Students with the ability to deal with the demands of the course. Previous grades are not so important for students who have left school some time ago and whose English skills have developed since. As a rough guide, if you can write an effective letter to a business or organisation, can read the news reports in a quality newspaper without difficulty, and can be an effective contributor (this means listening and putting views across!) to a family discussion, you should be able to cope with the demands of this course. What will I study ? The programme content aims to: Develop writing skills through: * Essays * Personal and creative writing Develop reading skills through: * A variety of literary and non-literary texts. * Commenting on magazine articles, persuasive writing and extracts from travel writing and autobiographies. * Some reading of literature is required. Students will be given the opportunity to take part in small group discussions. How will I be assessed ? Assessment is through: * Examination (40%) * 3 x Controlled Assessment (60%) (including Speaking and Listening) What qualifications could I achieve ? On successful completion of this course, you will achieve a GCSE in English. What can the course lead to ? The successful completion of a GCSE, coupled with other subjects, will help you progress onto A Levels and Access Courses. GCSE English is the standard English Language qualification required by universities, colleges and employers and this important qualification also helps students to cope with the language demands of other courses. A recommended syllabus for students who wish to take the subject further would be A Level Literature or A Level Language and Literature. How do I join the course ? Please complete an enrolment form when you come to Part-Time Enrolment. Will I need an interview ? Yes. You may also be asked to sit a short written test. Are there any extra costs for equipment/materials ? Students will need to purchase: * Copies of the set texts Exam cost is an ADDITIONAL COST unless included in the course fee.
