Students will gain an understanding of UK and European policy designed to promote sustainability and an overview of the renewables industry. They will also explore selected renewables in more detail to compare with conventional energy sources in domestic and business use.
Entry RequirementsIt is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved 4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science or equivalent. Learners must also have an interest in sustainable energy.
What You Will StudyThis course consists of three broad range topics to include:
Understand influences on the promotion of sustainable development: Students will identify current laws and groups in the UK and Europe promoting sustainable development and examine their own lifestyle and behaviour and suggest ways to reduce their eco-footprint. Understand the role played by wind and biomass renewable energy: Students will identify and describe the extent of current power generation from biomass and wind power in the UK and Europe and its future potential.
Understand comparative costs of energy production and distribution: Students will compare and contrast the costs of wind and biomass renewable energy with oil and gas sources. This will enable comparison of the environmental benefits of renewable energy as well as the economic costs for domestic and commercial energy users.
Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.
What Next?Successful learners may progress on to a Level 3 programme, such as a Certificate or Diploma in Sustainable Energy or an Extended Diploma in Environmental Sustainability. They may also progress onto a range of relevant short professional development courses delivered at EaRTH.
Alternatively students may wish to undertake an environmental apprenticeship at Bicton or gain employment in a relevant industry.
