This course provides a comprehensive overview for anyone with experience in renewable energy or an interest in developing their knowledge or career in this sector. Students will look at all aspects of safe working practices, relationships and the legal drivers for the move towards sustainable energy in the UK and Europe. Participants have the option to study one of two technology pathways: wood fuel (biomass) with a focus on fuel supply, boiler installation and system maintenance; or wind energy with a focus on turbine technology, design and operation criteria, and system maintenance.

Entry Requirements

It is essential that your Initial Assessment results show that you are working towards Level 2. You will also need to have achieved 4 GCSEs at grades A-C, including English, Maths and Science or equivalent. Learners must also have an interest in renewable energy or some experience of working in the sector.

What You Will Study

This course consists of three broad range topics with students required to choose one of the two technology pathways in addition to the mandatory units:

Mandatory Units:

  • Safe working practices in the renewables industry
  • Sustainability and the renewables industry
  • Contribute to positive working relationships in the renewables industry

Wood Fuel Pathway:

  • Biomass fuel supply
  • Converting biomass to energy and power
  • Maintenance of biomass fuel systems

Wind Fuel Pathway:

  • Fuel supply technology – wind power
  • Converting wind to energy and power
  • Maintenance of wind systems

Functional Skills
You will also work towards nationally recognised functional qualifications in English, Maths and ICT.

What Next?

Successful learners may progress on to a Level 3 programme, such as a Certificate or Diploma in Sustainable Energy or an Extended Diploma in Environmental Sustainability. They may also progress onto a range of relevant short professional development courses delivered at EaRTH.

Alternatively students may wish to undertake an environmental apprenticeship at Bicton or gain employment in a relevant industry.
