Course Description

The aim is to meet the needs of learners who work or wish to work in the animal care industry and to allow the students to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment or career progression in the animal care or veterinary nursing sector. We use naturally occurring opportunities and every week students will be rotated around the animal care unit to care, clean and feed the various animals at Bicton; including mammals, reptiles, fish and birds.
Units include:

  • Maintaining the safety of self and others in the workplace
  • Assisting with the care, feeding and accommodation of a range of small animal and exotic species
  • Assisting with the movement and handling of a range of small animal and exotic species

Functional Skills
You will also gain nationally recognised functional skills qualifications (English, Maths and ICT).

Assessment Methods

The teaching and assessment of these subjects is usually embedded in the practical subjects covered.
A small amount of paperwork is needed for the student’s portfolio although most of the assessment is through practical observations.

Progression

Successful learners may progress to a full time post 16 Level 2 programme, Apprenticeship or employment.

All progression routes are reliant on the student reaching certain levels in Literacy and Numeracy.
