What will I study?

This e-learning course looks at the issues relating to safeguarding adults. There are numerous notable drivers that have helped to shape the UKs approach towards safeguarding adults and the course will explore many of them, looking at important regulations. It is often impossible to determine whether someone is vulnerable just by looking at them and can include people in need in community care services; people with mental or other disability; people unable to take care of themselves or unable to protect themselves against harm or exploitation or a person can be vulnerable by virtue of age or illness.

Attitudes and beliefs are shaped by our experiences, the media, ethnicity, culture, religion, etc. These influence our judgments and affect our service delivery, which then impacts on the service user. Think carefully – your own attitudes and beliefs could, yet shouldn’t, alter your provision of care.

This course includes scenarios to help you to think about what you would do in a given situation.

Learners will:

  • Explore commonly held attitudes towards vulnerable people and how these have an impact on the service provided.
  • See how values and attitudes can block recognition or have an effect on the decisions professionals make regarding taking action.
  • Outline the signs and indicators of abuse, definitions and types of abuse and what to look for, particularly regarding unintentional harm.
  • Reflect on the law – key legislation and guidance regarding issues of consent and duty of care.
  • Learn what to do if they are worried, what their responsibility is, what happens next and the role and responsibility of managers.
