The Electrical Installation advanced apprenticeship is available for learners aged from 16-65 who are employed in the Electrical Installation industry. College attendance is on a day-release basis and assessment will take place in the workplace. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence to prove their skills, understanding and knowledge of the subject. Training is provided through workshop sessions, tutorials and classroom teaching.
This course is nationally recognised and provides stepping stones to further qualifications which link practical skills and theoretical knowledge. The course is modular and is completed over a 42 month period; the Level 3 Certificate is awarded when the required numbers of Electrical units, portfolio, Functional skills in Mathematics, English and IT and the AM2 have been obtained.
Course content
In-house training will take place one day a week and regular assessments and reviews will occur in the workplace. Learners will work towards an NVQ level 3 in Electrical Installation building and structures, Functional skills level 2 in Mathematics, English and level 1 IT, health and safety and Employer's Rights and Responsibilities. The Standards for the competencies have been set by the Lead Body for the Electrical Installation Industry. The qualification is awarded by the City and Guilds of London Institute for this College.
Teaching and assessment
Evidence must be provided of ability to successfully perform a series of practical tasks throughout the course. The evidence can be collected at work, or by way of the realistic working environment at college. The teaching strategies suit a wide range of learning styles - they include ILT (Information learning technology), classroom based delivery, practical tasks, simulated I.L.T. and workshop tasks.
Entry requirements
Have five GCSE’s grade A – C, including Mathematics and English.
Must be employed in the Electrical Installation industry for a minimum of 30 hours a week and be able to attend college one day a week.
Compulsory attendance at a college interview day with assessment in English, Mathematics and technical skills.
Progression
The successful completion of level 3, can be followed by a Higher qualification such as an BTEC HNC/D. Having achieved the level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, students will be classified as fully-skilled Approved Electricians.
