General information
This course is particularly suitable for people who are, or are planning to be, working or volunteering in an education setting and who have some experience of this role at present.
This is a knowledge based qualification suitable for all support roles in schools, including voluntary/parent helpers who would like to develop an understanding of how settings operate and the role of support workers.
Students undertake an 80 hour placement in an education setting, over the duration of the course, and this provides the practical experience to enhance the knowledge gained through the course.

All students put together a portfolio of evidence which consists of class exercises, case studies, homework tasks, such as reflective journal entries, and short reports. Students will also begin to develop display and research skills.
Course content
This qualification consists of 11 units which include:
- Child and young persons development
- Safeguarding
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
- Schools as organisations
- Supporting learning activities
To be awarded this qualification students are require to successfully complete all units.
Teaching and assessment
The course is primarily classroom based, however students are required to find and complete a minimum of 80 hours of placement in a school setting (playgroups and nurseries are not suitable) and the placement must be across all curriculum subjects not just literacy and numeracy. Students will also be observed on their placement.
The course will run from September to July for three hours per week. In addition there will be tutorials and workshops one day per week in the school holidays, which are optional.
Entry requirements
English and maths at Level 1 or above plus an enhanced CRB check. All students must secure their own placements in an education setting.
Additional course costs
Course fees for 2013/14 and awarding body registration fees are to be confirmed. In addition all students will be required to obtain an Enhanced CRB check at £44.
There are no concessions available for the awarding body registration and the enhanced CRB check fee, however the tuition fee is means tested so assistance may be available.
Progression
After this course you can progress onto the NCFE Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 3.
Dates and times
Classes take place one day a week for 3 hours and the course lasts for a full academic year.
