The course is aimed at students who wish to:

  • Day and Evening classes available
  • Improve basic maths (Numeracy), English (Literacy) and computing (ICT) skills for everyday living
  • Go on to other further education courses
  • Improve employment prospects

Classes are kept deliberately small to maximise individual attention to students’ needs. Group sizes are small, usually with a maximum of twelve students. This ensures all students get the attention they need. Students work at their own pace. Groups work from Entry Level up to Level 2.

Course content

Students are able to gain the necessary skills to achieve a qualification at the appropriate level. The tuition is delivered in a small group environment, whilst at the same time students are expected to develop a positive and independent approach to study.

Literacy: written communication, including spelling; speaking and listening; reading.

Numeracy: number skills (e.g. addition, multiplication, subtraction); measurement, shape and space (e.g. money, length, area, volume, perimeter); handling data (e.g. tables, charts, averages)

Information Technology: online communication (Internet and email); word processing (creating letters and documents); presentations (creating computer slide shows); spreadsheets and graphs; databases.

Teaching and assessment

At the beginning of your course you have an initial assessment, which helps us to draw up a learning plan for you. Your progress is reviewed at regular intervals and new targets are agreed. To ensure that everyone gets the attention they need, group sizes are small. There is tutorial support.

Entry requirements

There are no formal requirements. You will be assessed to ensure this course is suited to your needs. You will be expected to be working at Entry Level 1 or above for English and maths. The course is suitable for people over 19 years old.

Additional course costs

The course is FREE. (Non-EU students may be charged a fee).

Progression

Return to Learn is regarded as a springboard to other courses here at the college and is a good way for students to improve their employment prospects and their confidence.

On successful completion of the course, learners will have the opportunity to gain a qualification equivalent to GCSE grade C in Maths and/or English.

Dates and times

One year, part-time, day and evening (1 or 2 days/evenings per week). You can work at your own pace. The daytime hours are 9.30am to 3pm, which may suit you if you have family commitments. The evening hours are 6.30pm - 9.00 pm. Starting in September.
