Full Time

The A Level widens students’ knowledge of aspects of language study and deepens their knowledge of how language works. Students develop their awareness of the key constituents and systems of language and learn to apply this to the analysis of a wide range of texts, spoken or written, from the present or the past. Students develop their writing skills and learn to tailor their language according to the demands of audience, purpose and genre.

Full Time

AS Level


LG1 – 60% (30% of complete A Level) Introduction to the Language of Texts (examination). Two or more texts are provided and candidates are asked to analyse the language used in detail, using appropriate terminology and knowledge of key components of language. LG2 – 40% (20% of complete A Level) Original Writing and Exploring Spoken Language (coursework). Candidates are required to submit a 3,000 word folder containing two tasks. The first is an analysis of spoken language in the media and the second requires the students to produce a piece of creative writing with a commentary which discusses their language choices


A Level


LG3 – 40% (20% of complete A Level) Language Investigation and Writing for Specific Purposes (coursework). Candidates will submit a 3,000 word folder divided into 2 sections. The first assignment is an investigation into an area of spoken or written English and the second will require students to select, study and write in their chosen non-fiction genre and produce a commentary. LG4 – 60% (30% of complete A Level) Analysing and Evaluating Language Modes and Contexts (examination). Candidates analyse, discuss and evaluate spoken language data and language from different periods.



How you will gain the qualification

Each year is assessed as follows:-


60% external exam


40% coursework


There is a mock examination each year and regular assignments will be set throughout the course.


What qualifications you need

GCSE English Language C grade or above alongside either English Literature or a modern foreign language at C grade or above. However, a minimum of 6 full course GCSEs grade C or above is required including those listed above.


Where to next

English Language is relevant to a wide range of H.E. courses and careers. It provides excellent preparation for any university course in English. The skills that are acquired through the course will enhance students’ use of the English Language and make it ideal for students wishing to pursue careers in fields such as journalism and the media, law and teaching. The focus on language frameworks also makes it very useful for students thinking of studying speech therapy.
