Opportunities to develop good practical skills for HE or the work
place 5. Revision and support sessions available throughout the
year. What will I Study? You will study 2 units. Unit 1 follows on
from GCSE with the foundation topics of atomic structure and
bonding, moles and equations, chemicals from oil and the periodic
table. Unit 2 develops these ideas further with topics on enthalpy
changes, kinetics and equilibria, redox reactions, groups 2 and 7,
extraction of metals and organic chemistry. How will I be Taught?
There will be 2 sessions a week, a 2 hour class and a 3 hour class
with a half hour break. You will have one teacher for all your
sessions. All classes will be in well equipped laboratories.
Classes will include a mixture of presentations, demonstrations,
discussions, practical work and exam question practice. Students
will be expected to work both individually and in groups. You will
be set homework each week and have regular tests every 3 or 4 weeks
with mock exams in January. How will I be Assessed? You will have
two written exams one on each module,1.25 and 1.75 hours, in June
plus an assessment of practical skills during the year. This
involves a number of assessed practicals and a written 1 hour exam
What our students say? Chemistry is an interesting but demanding
course. We do lots of practical work which helps us understand the
theory. You need to put in a lot of effort from the start of the
course and complete the homework each week. The staff are really
helpful and supportive
