About This Course:

The HNC/D Illustration course develops your creative ability and technical skill in a programme which is mainly based in the studio. Your projects are developed from initial ideas and sketchbook drawings, through to illustration artwork ready for presentation to a client.

Students who successfully complete the HNC/D course will achieve the HNC/D Visual Communication.

What You Need:

If you don’t have the required qualifications, we’ll consider you for a place based on your experience and examples of your work.

  • NC in Art & Design, Illustration or Graphic Design OR:
  • Art & Design at Higher and English at minimum Intermediate 2

  • Art & Design at Higher and English at minimum Intermediate 2
  • You will also be expected to submit examples of your art & design work including figure drawings to support your application.

More Information

What You Study:

Year 1

Visual Communication, Observational Drawing, Creative Process, Mixed Media, Art and Design Project, Creative Industries, Digital Imaging, Illustration, Printmaking and Producing Print, Specialist Illustration, Graded Unit 1 and Life Drawing from the Nude Model.

Year 2

Design Production, Creative Project, Illustration Project, Digital and Bitmap Imaging, Developmental Drawing Portfolio, Observational Drawing Portfolio, Working in the Creative Industries, Client Initiated Design Project, Graded Unit 2 and Illustration Advanced.

After The Course:

Career

The HNC/D course can lead to jobs in the communication industry, advertising agencies, design consultants, book design, magazine and newspaper publishing, private practice and visual communications.

Continuing study

When you successfully complete the HND course, we can help make it easy for you to move onto 2nd or 3rd year of degree-level courses such as the BA (Hons) Graphic Design for Digital Media at Glasgow Caledonian University; BA (Hons) Visual Communications at Dundee University; BA (Hons) Digital Art at University of the West of Scotland.

How Long:

Two years, starting in August. You can also leave after one year with a Higher National Certificate.

Location:

City Campus North Hanover Street.
