You learn the techniques, craft skills, technology and related
science required for electrical installation work. You also cover
the regulations and health and safety requirements governing
electrical installation processes including knowledge of the
organisation and structure of the industry within which these are
carried out.
Units include:
- Health and Safety in Building Services Engineering
- Electrical Science
- Electrical Installations Technology
- Installation of wiring systems and enclosures
- Understand how to communicate with others in Building Services
Engineering.
If you enrol without grade C or above in GCSE Mathematics and
English you will be required to follow a GCSE or a functional
skills programme to develop your skills further.
During the first five weeks initial assessments will take place to
make sure you and the level of work are suitably matched. There
will be written assignments and online exams for each of the units.
Further assessment is by completing a number of major practical
assignments in the College’s electrical workshops. They are carried
out under exam conditions.
You learn through a mix of practical activities and classroom
theory with ongoing assessments and assignments.
You gain a recognised industry qualification. This course offers sound basic training for prospective electricians who need to know the techniques, technology, science and health and safety required for electrical installation work.
Applicants for a Level 2 programme will normally have:
- at least 4 GCSEs at grade D or above and/or a completed Level 1
award
- GCSEs to include English and maths at Grade D or above or Level 1
functional skills qualifications
- the willingness to study for an additional qualification in
English and/or maths

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an
initial assessment. All students will have their literacy and
numeracy needs supported within the programme.
You can continue to attend full-time for another year to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures). You can work within the industry and return to College to complete your training through day-release courses on an advanced apprenticeship or you may want to progress to BTEC engineering courses at Level 3.
