Joint Honours combinations allow you to pursue complementary paths of study in two disciplines, developing common threads and enhancing specific skills through shared learning.

Drama and Education, for example, highlights the processes of learning and development in performance. Creative Writing shares Drama’s interest in the creative uses of language while a Drama and English combination emphasises both disciplines’ interest in written texts. Drama and Arts and Festivals Management combines a study of creative performance and the theory and practice of the management of arts industries, while Drama and Media and Communication reflects the importance of media in contemporary performance.

  • A levels: Normally 260 UCAS points from at least two full A levels, including at least one grade B or equivalent.
  • BTEC National Diploma: Distinction/Merit/Merit
  • You must also have five GCSEs grades A–C including English Language or Literature at grade C or above. We also accept the BTEC First Diploma plus two GSCEs including English at grade C or above.
  • International Baccalaureate: 28+ points
  • Access: Pass

International Students

If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent when you start the course is essential. English language tuition| is available at DMU both before and during the course if required.

Teaching and assessment

Students are taught through practical studio workshops, lectures and seminars. Practical workshops usually run for three hours. Lectures and seminars normally last one hour.

We employ a wide range of forms of assessment in Drama Studies that develop skills in writing as well as skills in communication, presentation, independent practice and group work. Modules might use portfolios of creative and critical work, research essays, independent and group performance, seminar presentations, or combinations of these. Discussion and feedback from tutors are a vital part of the assessment process and many of the modules include formative assessment opportunities, especially in year one.

Academic expertise

Our staff are experienced lecturers, researchers and practitioners in a number of different fields. While studying Drama at DMU students will be taught by staff whose expertise includes Shakespeare in performance, popular theatre, language and performance, 20th century modernist drama, postcolonial performance, Live Art, 20th century women playwrights, theatre and translation, and contemporary performance practice.

Student learning is further enhanced by visiting lecturers and practitioners. Drama staff are dedicated to the student experience more widely and run extra and co-curricular activities and events throughout the year.

Industry links and professional accreditation

De Montfort University and Curve theatre have recently signed a new cultural partnership. The partnership follows a recent collaborative production; students from across all years of the Drama programmes at DMU participated in productions of two Steven Berkoff plays at the Curve Theatre, Leicester. East directed by Curve’s artistic director, Paul Kerryson, and Greek, directed by Curve’s associate director, Adel Al-Salloum.

Graduate careers

Graduates in Drama Studies possess excellent research, communication and reflective skills, alongside collaborative skills and a solid knowledge of IT. They have the ability to devise, organise and self-manage projects and evaluate their outcomes, and are able to deal confidently with public performance. These qualities mean that opportunities exist for graduates of Drama Studies in diverse areas of employment. Recent graduates work in theatre companies and in various aspects of media production.

Other career destinations are community arts, primary, secondary and further education or postgraduate study. Drama has also proved good training for sales and management careers.

Patrick Ratliff graduated in 2008 and is Marketing Officer at Curve, and Nicola Betteridge, who graduated in 2009, is a secondary school Drama teacher. In different contexts both utilise the skills and knowledge acquired as DMU Drama studies students.

Facilities

DMU offers some of the finest facilities in the sector to support studies in Drama. The Performing Arts Centre for Excellence Building (PACE) provides four studios and rehearsal spaces designed specifically for performance-based learning activities. Further studios are located in the Campus Centre. Students are able to book rehearsal space and equipment to support creative responses to the curriculum.
