About the course

Social Work has long-standing commitment to equal opportunities and a tradition of seeking to support student applications from a wide and diverse background.

The main aim of the module is to help applicants develop academic study skills, practice experience, knowledge and understanding about the role and function of social work in Britain.

The overarching objective is to enable non-traditional students the opportunity to enhance their accessibility to university degree programmes, in particular the entry requirements for the Degree in Social Work.

Entry and admission criteria

There are no formal entry requirements to the Preparation for Social work module however having functional skills level two in Maths and English is desirable to enable student to maximise the GCSE Maths and English teaching.

It is designed for applicants who want to undertake social work training and who will be in a position to do so after the successful completion of the programme.

Applicants are asked to attend an information and applicant day where they complete an application form and a written test. The ability to complete the form and communicate information using good basic written skills is essential.

Teaching and assessment

You will be taught by expert Social Work and Youth and Community staff who have a background in professional practice. Learning and teaching methods typically include; face-to-face sessions, independent learning, presentations, directed reading, group discussions, small group work activities and e-learning facilities.

The programme consists of one module which takes place on alternate Tuesday from September to March. There are 12 teaching days, running 10am - 4pm. Assessment typically consists of two compulsory assignments; a formative assignment, which will provide you with feedback on your academic writing skills, and a summative assignment.

Both are assessed at undergraduate level, and once you have passed the assignments you will be awarded 15 academic credits (subject to change); demonstrating your ability to study and write to undergraduate assessment requirements.

• Developing study skills required for academic writing

• Developing an understanding of Professional Practice

• Gaining the relevant experience

• Preparation for UCAS applications and interviews

Work experience and placements

Student will be offered support to make contact with relevant voluntary sector organisations in order to meet the practice hour’s requirements for application to the social work degree|.

Graduate careers

This module will prepare you to apply for Social Work| or Youth and Community Development BA (Hons)|, leading to a career as qualified social or youth worker, as well as a range of other programmes including; Health Studies BA (Hons)| or National Vocational Studies and Foundation Degrees.

Completion of the module also enables the opportunity to apply for employment in the field of social care.
