A lot of emphasis is placed on the diversity of cinematic practices, as well as the social, political, cultural, historical and philosophical contexts within which films are produced. You'll benefit from studying in a city with a great literary and cinematic heritage. English is studied from the early 19th century to the present day so that you'll get to experience a truly modern and interdisciplinary approach to literature. You'll also develop an appreciation of different forms and explore the value of literature in the modern world. What's involved This is a full time course which last four years. You will learn through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, specialist workshops, practical work, and independent study. Year 1 Introduction to Literature, 19th Century Literature & Culture 1, Study Skills, Histories: Film, Narrative: Text & Film, and Literature & Adaptation, or an optional module Year 2 Literature of Empire: Texts & Contexts, Popular Culture, The Modern Novel, Contemporary Hollywood Cinema, and either Modern Drama or 19th Century Culture & Literature 2, plus either Theory for Film Practice, Creative Writing or another optional module Year 3 Understanding Cultural & Literary Theory, Cultural & Literary Theory Into Practice, and four optional modules from Journalism & Literature, Science Fiction, Advanced Topics in Photography & Film, Women's Writing & Filmmaking, Creative Writing or Romantic, Victorian & Modern Poetry Year 4 Four optional modules from Book History, Postcolonial Fiction and Film, National Literatures, Cities Real & Imagined, Fact & Fiction, Crime in Text and Film, the Gothic Tradition in Literature, plus a dissertation
