About This Course

The full-time HNC Computing will run over two days per week starting in September 2011 and will complete in August 2012. There are eight modules in total for the year. The emphasis on the HNC is to use real live assignment briefs so that you can develop your chosen skills - you can choose an employer to approach for your placements. Four modules contain the core essential modules required for this programme by Edexcel (awarding body); the other four have been chosen following feedback from local employers. The course is timetabled for 2 days per week, 2pm to 9pm approx, giving 8 units . There is a part-time evenings only route available. See our part-time or HE prospectus for more details. All students will be involved in an Induction Day. BTEC registration fee will be payable. To apply for this course you should complete an application form and return it to Admissions who will organise an interview. INDUSTRY INFORMATION Key facts: •There is a total IT and Telecoms workforce of 1.5 million of which: ?890,000 people are in IT and Telecoms products and services ?600,000 IT and Telecoms professionals are working in organisations outside of the IT and Telecoms industries •There are around 105,000 businesses in the UK offering IT and Telecoms products and services. •IT-intensive sectors represent 55% of the UK's total Gross Value Added. •Less than 1% of those employed in IT and Telecoms occupations are under 18. •22% of companies who are trying to recruit IT and Telecoms professionals report difficulties in attracting applicants with the right skills. •58% of the workforce has a degree or higher education qualification. •The IT industry is predicted to grow at a rate of 2.5% per year for the next ten years. •There are 100,930 IT manufacturing and services establishments in the UK employing 600,000 people. •The IT workforce accounts for 4% of the UK workforce. Jobs in the IT industry include: Business analyst; Games developer; CAD/CAM Programmer/Trainer; IT trainer; Service technician; Software engineer/architect; Technology consultant; Web designer; Systems architect; Technical author.

Entry Criteria

All applicants will undergo a selection interview. This course requires a satisfactory reference and a tariff of 160 UCAS points from within the main programme area of study. Further points awarded through key/functional skills and other UCAS accredited qualifications will be recognised as additional achievement. Exceptional entry may be authorised for mature applicants where previous occupational experience is recognised. This course must be applied for through UCAS: http://ucas.com/students/apply/

Progression Details

The course is designed to give you real work experience for your CV whilst gaining a Higher Education qualification. On completion of the HNC Computing you will be eligible to study the HND Computing or apply for second year of a degree or foundation degree programme.
