Suitable For

Those currently teaching or supporting learners with ADHD in mainstream teaching and learning or who are looking to do so in the future.

Course Content

The course consist of one mandatory unit ‘Meeting the Needs of Learners with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the Mainstream Classroom’.

There are 4 learning outcomes and at the end of the course the learners will:

1 Know what ADHD means

• Define the meaning of ADHD
• Examine the causes of ADHD
• Examine facts which dispel myths surrounding ADHD
• Describe theories relating the to causes of ADHD.

2 Be able to identify the impact that ADHD has on a person:

• Evaluate the mental symptoms of ADHD
• Evaluate physical symptoms of ADHD
• Examine other conditions often associated with ADHD
• Evaluate common medications for ADHD, with reference to the known side effects.

3 Be able to modify the impact that ADHD has on learning

• Analyse the effects that ADHD has on an individual in an educational context
• Plan and adapt lessons in order to engage and motivate learners with ADHD
• Examine the ways in which teaching and learning resources can be modified to meet the needs of learners with ADHD.

4 Be able to identify key principles of positive behaviour management

• Examine how to overcome common behaviour traits in order to support learning
• Evaluate methods used to prevent occurrences of poor behaviour in the classroom
• Evaluate approaches used to adjust the classroom environment to improve behaviour.

Assessment Method

Learners must provide evidence of learning and achievement against all of the assessment criteria specified within each unit. The criteria are met through a variety of activities and the completion of a workbook.

Entry Requirements

19+ An appropriate level of written and spoken English (working at level 2 or equivalent) and an interest in people with ADHD.
