Features
The programme of study consists of:
- Three assessed taught courses: Foundations of Professionalism,
Methods of Enquiry 1 and 2, and a specialist course, International
Education, which is not assessed.
The taught element is assessed through a portfolio of three assignments of 5,000 words each and a reflective statement; the IFS is presented as a report of about 20,000 words.
- An institution-focused study (IFS) leading to a report of about 20,000 words, providing evidence of how the study has supported your professional development and extended your understanding of your professional role
- A research-based thesis of approximately 45,000 words which must make a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the field of study and afford evidence of originality and a capacity for autonomous research.
Your assignments, report and thesis should include an international, intercultural or comparative dimension. There is also an oral examination which will test both your thesis and your conceptual understanding of the integration of all the elements of the programme.
Who is this programme for?
The programme is designed for an international body of practitioners who would like to extend their professional expertise and training and develop skills in research, evaluation and reflection on practice. It is relevant to all academic staff in universities and colleges, school teachers, health professionals, and other professionals, including those working in international organisations. It is also suitable for senior administrators in schools, universities and educational and government bodies.
Attendance
The programme is designed to be completed in four years' of part-time study, and the maximum period of registration is seven years. The entry date is October each year.
It is taught through a combination of intensive one-week blocks in London with face-to-face tutorial support, and by email and written correspondence when you are in your own country. Opportunities are built into the programme to enable you to keep in close touch, both formally and informally, with your colleagues on the EdD.
Entry requirements
You should have acquired at least four years' full-time experience in a relevant professional area and should normally hold a postgraduate masters degree with good grades from a recognised university. We will expect you to provide details of the grades you obtained in your masters degree and a copy of, or a substantial extract from, your masters dissertation.
We also ask you to provide a 2,000-word statement summarising the research you would like to conduct if you are admitted to the EdD programme and stating how you feel the programme would enhance your professional development.
