Masters Level Module

This module is designed to inform and enhance the professional practice of teaching at the point of entry into the profession by introducing participants to the research base that underlies secondary art and design teaching and fostering an enquiring, reflective and critical approach to teaching beyond the classroom and in partnership with the cultural sector. It has been designed to extend participants' experience of teaching beyond the classroom in galleries, museums and other cultural sites. It enables them to observe and develop different pedagogic strategies (formal and informal) and to understand how educators work with young people in community settings other than school. Through critical reflection, site-specific teaching and an evaluative report (in form of power-point presentation or poster) participants engage with the implications of their experience for learning and teaching both in and beyond the classroom. Throughout the module participants are expected to relate their experience to recent and relevant theory and research. Participants will work collaboratively with two cultural venues in London to explore the potential of these sites for developing curriculum materials for art and design education.
