This exciting new module, piloted in 2011, is the first of its kind in the UK. It is designed for teachers who aspire to lead the way forward in teaching this complex and disturbing history. The module has been awarded special funding. Applicants who have previously attended one of the IOE's CPD courses in Holocaust education will not be required to pay the usual tuition fees (in the region of 800 GBP). This module is a cutting edge programme of academic study, intellectually rigorous but wholly accessible. It provides opportunities to work with the collected data and emerging findings of research being conducted by the Centre for Holocaust Education with teachers and young students of the Holocaust. During the module participants engage in a variety of creative tasks employing strategies that analyse the aims, rationale and possibilities for Holocaust education and critically contemplate its challenges. The module will equip you with an in-depth understanding of Holocaust education, strengthening your academic knowledge and professional practice in teaching and learning. You will be exposed to archival material (from centres such as United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Shoah Foundation, Jewish Museum, and Wiener Library), the work of leading historians and educators and engage in lively online debate about issues relating to the field. The module aims to guide you through some of the tensions and sensitivities that ensue and also seeks to help support teachers in developing a coherent whole school approach to Holocaust education. The course is fully online and its design is compact and flexible. This will help to enable busy teachers to still manage their professional lives while undertaking the course. The teaching element lasts for eight weeks followed by a period of individual study that focuses on a writing task and is supported by a personal tutor. You can take the course as a stand-alone module or use the credits gained on successful completion to contribute towards a full Masters degree which can be undertaken with us at the Institute of Education or elsewhere. The MA in Education (Citizenship/ History/Religious Education) would be an appropriate master's course if you wished to continue your studies at the IOE.
Applications are taken online via UKPASS. Please apply now as places are limited. For further details please email Centre for Holocaust Education Administrator Shazia Syed: s.syed@ioe.ac.uk.
