Who is the course for?
This course is intended for everybody wishing to gain a reading knowledge of the German language, and therefore especially aimed at students enrolled in Humanities and Social Science courses. No prior knowledge of German is required as the course is for complete beginners.
What are the objectives of the course?
To acquire basic language skills necessary to read a wide range of academic German texts with the aid of a dictionary.
By the end of the course you will:
- be able to identify keywords and key expressions in a German text
- be able to identify the subject matter and the general nature of a German text
- be able to use a dictionary more effectively
- have acquired the fundamental elements of German grammar and syntax
- have acquired basic academic vocabulary in German
How is the course taught?
- Students participate in group and pair work according to a syllabus based on systematic grammatical progression.
- Students will also be offered guidance in self-study and set optional homework tasks.
