The Extended Diploma is a well respected course equivalent to three A levels and can lead to progression into work or Higher Education. The first year of the course is shared with the Level 3 Diploma. In the second year, a further 6 units are taken to gain the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.

As part of the course, a wide range of certificates of competence can be chosen to enhance career prospects.

Course Content

As part of the Level 3 Extended Diploma you will complete the following:
All units from the Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture plus:

  • Business management
  • Agricultural livestock management
  • Combinable crop production
  • Pig production
  • Workshop skills and farm habitat management
  • Farm habitat management
  • Organic Farming

Certificates of competence available include spraying, workshop practice, chainsaws, telescopic materials handlers, ATVs, milking and safe use of veterinary medicines.

Students will also be given the opportunity to develop their practical skills on the College farm, which will include occasional weekend and evening duties. The course includes a week long study tour to Europe.

Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, industrial visits and study tours. Students will have the opportunity to gain a range of proficiency tests and study Farm Records and Accounts.

Two years at Kingston Maurward. Lectures, demonstrations, practical instruction, farm visits and a study tour. Students will have the opportunity to gain a range of additonal qualifications.

Days:
Year 1: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday, Friday
Year 2: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Entry Requirements

School leavers will need four GSCEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English, or a Level 2 Diploma at Distinction level or Level 2 Diploma in Work-based agriculture with good levels of Maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work is required.

Applicants with the Level 3 Diploma can proceed directly to the second year of the course.

Farm Records and Accounts. Certificate of Competence in a range of machinery operations.

Employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as the industry is experiencing a skills shortage. The course is specially designed to develop practical skills and produce students that are able to operate machinery and look after livestock to a high standard, who also have the technical and management knowledge for a successful career.
