Learner & Entry Requirements:
Suitable for beginners. Basic computer literacy is required (ability to navigate around a PC and save files to a chosen folder). It is beneficial to have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements at home.
General & First Session:
If you already have a memory stick (USB Flash Drive to copy and take digital files home) please bring it, but do not purchase one specifically for the class Please bring any of your own old, damaged photographs (of a good standard) from your family archives in need of repair for retouching. Scan them and take home in a revised digital format! Poor quality snaps taken on a box-camera can not be enhanced. Suitable images retouched in the past have usually been of good quality when originally taken by a Victorian portrait photographer or professional.
KAE is unable to offer refunds for any materials, equipment or books if the class is subsequently closed.
Course Aims & Objectives:
To introduce Adobe Photoshop, the world-standard digital image-editing software and Photo design tool. By the end of the session students will have the knowledge and confidence to repair their own damaged, treasured Family Photographs.
SMART OBJECTIVES: By the end of this Taster students will be able to:
- Lighten and darken specific, selected areas of a photograph.
- Use the Rubber stamp clone tool and the Healing brush to repair selected areas of a damaged Family Photograph.
- Repair their own damaged or torn photographs and save different versions on different-sized formats.
By the end of the day you should have enough knowledge, confidence and ability to edit your own photographs or digital images using a number of techniques learned. You should be inspired to attend a 'Photoshop' beginners course. Please note that the pace of the class and individual differentiation with the application will govern progress, but there is usually a lot of distance travelled by the end of the session!
Assessment:
View the results of your work on a 'before and after' basis by looking at the colour laser print-outs of the images that you have edited and compare the results with the original files. Group discussion, question and answer sessions, observation, peer- and self-assessment are key factors.
Progression:
Photoshop Level 1 course would reinforce learning, and give a very good standard of entry level for this course.
Course Syllabus:
A tour of the tool palette and its uses. Methods of selecting images in order to edit them. Cutting, pasting and duplicating images, methods of re-touching and cloning detail. Extending the canvas size or picture area to fit the printer. Lightening and darkening areas of photographs, using various filters. Saving files in Jpeg and other formats - either for printing the results or changing file sizes for web use, or to attach to an E-mail. Individual projects encouraged in the afternoon session to reinforce the learning covered in the morning session. Individual help from the tutor is paramount in view of the time available. Printed results are the end product, and digital files can be taken home on the 'memory stick' media you have brought with them.
