Learner & Entry Requirement:
This is a specialist 6 week course introducing you to the fast and dynamic firing technique of Raku. This is an all levels course, so no previous experience is required, although some knowledge of ceramics would be useful. This course does not lead to a qualification.

Please bring general pottery tools and an apron or overall. Strong shoes must be worn and legs must be completely covered. Course Aim & Objective:
This course introduces the exciting process of Raku, which is a fast and dynamic firing technique. As the course is over 6 weeks it gives you the opportunity to develop your own style by extended exploration of the techniques' creative potential. Introduction to various glazing techniques, alongside involvement with the firing and post-firing reduction processes. Assess your results mid-way through the course and continue to further experiment. No advanced preparation is required for this course.
At the end of the course each learner should have:
discovered their own style by exploring the creative potential of the process through experimentation;
had the opportunity to take part in several Raku firings; and
glazed and fired their own pots.
Assessment:
Assessment is informal and on-going, based on one-to-one tutorials, group discussions and production of finished pieces.
We will recognise and record your progress and achievement through attainment of the following course goals:
- Ability to make pieces suitable for Raku to a high standard
- Ability to apply glaze appropriate for raku
- Knowledge of the raku process
- Knowledge and confidence to perform post firing reduction.
- Understand and apply the appropriate visual risk assessments and the Health & Safety skills and knowledge required to carry out activities related to this course.
- Your own negotiated aims and objectives.
Course Syllabus:
This practical course in Raku firing, for learners with little or no experience of making Raku pottery, covers all stages of making and preparation, including the final glaze firing stage and post-fired reduction processes. Decorating and glazing techniques.
