Course Description

Probably at no time in history has access to, and proficiency with, media and information technologies been more important in the public mind than it is today, nor more critical to policy making and teaching in government, schools and universities.

Nor at any time in the recent past have the nation's press, media, and information sectors been the object of as much intense public concern or scrutiny with a growing recognition of their unmatched importance in the conduct of our daily lives and democratic institutions.

Never before have the once separate worlds of news, stored knowledge, and the products of the mass media and entertainment industries converged locally, nationally, and globally, with even greater convergence certain to take place in the years ahead.

This Media Studies Diploma course explains the meaning of “media studies” in its broadest context and will appeal to anyone who may wish to gain a foothold in this exciting and innovative vocational sector.

Creative writing is one of the most enjoyable past-times and whether you are writing just for enjoyment or because you want to make it a career, this course will help you to explore your writing and find ways to improve your skills.

The first module will help you look at your writing and experiences of writing.  The idea is to explore your motivation and identify your aims for the course.  You will use this exploration to create a written piece that will give your tutor an idea of who you are and what sort of writer you are.

Module two will explore different types of texts and different genres.  An understanding of different types of texts and genres will help you to make informed choices about your own writing.  Most professional writers will tell you that they have a passion for reading and this module will ask you to explore your own reading habits and make critical readings of texts to understand why you like or dislike them.

The next module looks at starting to write.  It has tips on how to start, how to choose what to write and generate ideas for writing.  It also covers writing style, how to write dialogue and how to create characters.

Modules 4 to 11 each look at a different form of writing, covering short stories, poetry, longer texts, novels, life writing, writing for younger readers, non-fiction and scriptwriting.  Each module will look at examples and at ideas and techniques for generating written pieces.  Each module will also include exercises so you can try out some of the different types of writing and genres.

The last three modules explore the processes that surround creative writing and what it means to be a writer. Module 12 looks at the editorial process and why it is so important as well as at how you can edit your own writing and learn from editing and feedback.  Module 13 looks at publication and how you might move towards achieving this if this is your aim.

Finally, module 14 considers what it means to be a writer and how you continue in your writing when you have finished your course.  You have taken an important step by choosing to take a creative writing course.  It shows you are serious about your writing.  But it is only a beginning – your writing will be a lifetime commitment!
