Black and White Printing - Traditional and Experimental Photography, Short Course Programme

This course is all about traditional black and white darkroom techniques to help you produce an array of beautiful, striking and accomplished images. It is ideal for people of all levels of experience; those who have no film or darkroom experience, those with prior experience wishing to reconnect with the alchemy and craft of the darkroom, and fine artists looking for a creative medium.

The digital camera has become a ubiquitous means of image capture, producing instant results for editing or deleting. This digital technology grew from the more interactive and individual disciplines of traditional photographic methods and processes. For many students, exploring the magic of film and the more considered approach of darkroom practise is a revelation, and they find the hands-on artisan processes to be a far more engaging and rewarding experience, resulting in the most exciting and innovative work. This practical course is therefore aimed at anyone wishing to explore and enhance their imaging by using traditional processes whilst learning to improve their camera skills, composition and idea generation.

You will immerse yourself in our black and white darkrooms, working initially on a range of exercises set by your tutor, and progressing to more personal projects as the course continues. There will be short technical demonstrations of simple and more complex darkroom printing processes, problem solving, and useful tips and tricks to deepen your knowledge and understanding. The majority of your time will be spent learning through practise, with options to explore alternative processes such as pinhole photography, toning, and lith printing. There will be plenty of opportunity for one-to-one expert tuition irrespective of your knowledge and experience, as well as advice for anyone who is considering building a portfolio for future studies.

Upon completing the course you will have developed new camera skills and own a body of work that is broad, experimental, and demonstrates your personal approach.
