This course aims to provide you with the knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes to allow you to improve the health of individuals, groups, communities and populations using:
- exercise
- physical activity
- nutrition
- healthy eating.
You'll learn the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition science and how they relate to health and disease. Alongside this, we will ensure that you can apply this knowledge in a public health setting so you will learn about:
- the UK public health system
- the strategies in place to promote health using exercise
- physical activity and nutrition
- how to monitor and evaluate these.
You will have the opportunity to gain industry recognised additional qualifications in:
- Exercise Referral
- Food Hygiene
- Cook and Eat session delivery.
- Our multi-disciplinary approach enables you to work with staff from three outstanding academic teams at NTU – Sport Sciences, Biosciences and Public Health – as well as leading health practitioners.
- Our substantial network of external health practitioners will interact with you in a variety of ways such as through workshops, guest lectures, work placements, setting assessments, volunteering opportunities, and research projects.
- We recognise that behaviour change is a key part of health promotion; the inclusion of Communication Skills and Psychology adds particular value and reinforces the unique nature of the degree.
- You will become a member of the NTU Health Promotion Forum and work alongside the NTU Health Promotion Specialist on real-life briefs to improve the health of NTU students and staff.

The course has been developed with input from health professionals to ensure you have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills required to enhance your job prospects. You will have numerous opportunities to practice what you have learned including:
- dietary and exercise assessment sessions with volunteers (supported by your tutors)
- designing and delivering healthy eating sessions
- working in the community to increase physical activity levels
- practising your communication skills.

How will I be assessed?You will be assessed using a variety of methods including the following.

You will have around 12 hours of scheduled contact time per week. This will take the form of:
- traditional lectures and seminars
- practical workshops
- external visits.
The remainder of your time will guided independent study.
Practical classes for students will be taught in our purpose built laboratories in the Erasmus Darwin Building and the Rosalind Franklin building on Clifton campus. The majority of lectures and workshops are delivered on Clifton campus in locations such as:
- the Ada Byron King Building
- the John Clare Lecture Theatres.
In addition, you will undertake culinary skills sessions in the Universities teaching kitchen and Health Promotion lectures and workshops on the City campus.
The University has a wide range of sporting and health related facilities across all three campuses. There are:
- sport coaching
- sports injury clinics
- fitness suites
- specialist facilities
- more than 40 sports clubs on offer.
Sport, Exercise and Health Physiology Laboratories are fully equipped with specialist facilities that provide a high-quality, dynamic learning environment to cater for different types of exercise testing and physical activity.
British Olympic Association (BOA) Approved Environmental Chamber enables us to simulate climates anywhere in the world, from Everest to Egypt. The chamber has been used by Olympic athletes for acclimatisation to extreme competition environments.
The Culinary Skills Teaching Kitchen and the Lee Westwood Centre Nutrition Suite give students the opportunity to develop their cooking skills and deliver Cook and Eat sessions.
The School also features IT, Sport Psychology and Management Suites used for match analysis, statistical, nutritional and coaching analysis as well host of sporting clubs and societies to get involved in.
