Trading in Global Financial Markets, MSc

This innovative one-year Masters course is designed for ambitious individuals who wish to pursue a career in trading in global financial markets. The course combines practical and theoretical experience and learning, and includes a three month placement on a City trading floor.

The course focuses specifically on how to research, design and build winning investment and trading strategies and systems for all financial markets (stocks, futures, bonds and currencies), as well as on ever-changing technological, regulatory and structural changes to Global Financial Markets.

You will undertake a rigorous and intensive course, delivered by staff with a wealth of experience in trading and investment, who will teach you all aspects of being successful traders and investors using leading technology. The course includes a three-month placement on a City trading floor, which will include a combination of continued classroom learning and hands-on experience on a trading desk.

As a student on MSc Trading in Global Financial Markets you will be entitled to a free iPad to enhance your learning experience. Students will be provided with the iPad upon commencing the course to access the latest learning materials. Additionally, students will also be supplied with a £100 Blackwell's book voucher.

Course content

The course begins with a comprehensive development programme to prepare for your studies and develop key academic and transferable skills. This will include a residential course in the Peak National Park designed to improve your confidence, teamwork and communication skills.

During the year you will study a range of core and specialist modules. This knowledge development will be further enhanced by practical experience via a three-month placement on a City trading floor, with hands-on experience on a trading desk.

Study and support

Modules are taught in four phases, over 12 months. Beyond the initial induction, independent study weeks for preparation and submission of final module assessments follow the weeks of class contact.

Teaching and learning methods are centred around interactive workshops which are highly participative in nature and will employ case studies, discussions, business simulations and group activities.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used including: extension written reports, essays, individual and group projects and presentations.

The School is based in the impressive Newton Building on NTU's City site. In 2009 the building was involved in a £90 million regeneration project on the site. Whilst maintaining its historic beauty, the Grade II* listed building was transformed into an ultra-modern complex.
