Solaris 10 for Experienced Solaris 8 and 9 System Administrators

Prerequisites:

Recent experience administering Solaris 8 or Solaris 9. Experience or knowledge of managing disk partitions and UFS file systems, managing packages and patches from the command line, Jumpstart installation and basic management of disk volumes with the Solaris Storage Manager (SVM).

Course Description:

This Solaris Sun Microsystems training course is designed to teach experienced Sun Microsystems Solaris System Administrators the administration differences between previous versions of Solaris and Solaris 10.It will cover the main features that are either new or different in Solaris 10.

The delegates will practise:

• Administer services with the Service Management Facility
• Configure various security features
• Create RAID volumes with the Solaris Volume Manager
• Control Log file rotation
• Manage Flash Archives for installation
• Install updates with the Live Upgrade feature

By the end of the course the delegate should be able to administer services with the Service Management Facility, describe features of Multiterabyte UFS, manage patches with the Sun Update Connection Services, configure various security features, create RAID volumes with the Solaris Volume Manager, control Log file rotation, manage Flash Archives for installation, install updates with the Live Upgrade feature and describe the differences between Solaris 10 and older Solaris versions.

Managing the Solaris OS File System

• Identify new pseudo file systems
• Describe features of the Multiterabyte UFS
• Describe changes related to logging in UFS
• Describe the default behaviour of the mount command with respect to logging in UFS
• Describe the meaning of the devices flag of the mount command

Installing the Solaris OS

• State the installation requirements for the Solaris 10 OS
• Describe additional software groups introduced in the Solaris 10 OS

Introducing the Fundamentals of Package and Patch Administration

• Describe how signed packages and patches are implemented
• Implement patch management using the Sun Update Connection Services including the Sun Update Manager application and the smpatch command

Performing System Security

• Describe differences in user and network security

Configuring and Using Printer Services

• Identify network printing fundamental changes
• Configure and administer printer services

Networking

• Describe Network Interface Configuration Changes

Managing Crash Dumps, Core Files and Paging
