The Programme
This is a practical course for those seeking a career in
mechanical engineering. You will also study basic computer skills
and you must be prepared to write reports on your work. Programme
content includes; working in engineering technology, machining by

The Programme Content
You will follow two core units which outline the key elements of the world of Engineering. These include; health and safety, engineering mathematics and communication. You will also take five further technically specific units in a variety of areas; preparing to carryout work, milling, turning, bench fitting, sheet metal operations, welding and fabrication. The Level 2 Diploma in Engineering is a recognised qualification as the technical certificate for the apprenticeship in engineering, if at this stage you do not have an apprenticeship, this course lasting one year in duration will set you on the path toward completing this college part of the requirements of an apprenticeship. the course also has the benefit that progressing students can go on to a level 3 programme here at Petroc.
Entry Requirements
Four GCSEs at grade E or above, however you will be expected to have at achieved at least a grade D in both English and Maths.

Progression
This course is the first stage on an engineering career. You are advised to continue studying to Level 3 or to take up an Engineering Apprenticeship (you will need to find a job to do this). Level 3 study options include the National Diploma in Engineering or AS Level Engineering.
