Designed to meet the professional development needs of those wishing to improve their managerial or career prospects in the arts and cultural sector, this course has at its very heart, a focus on professional placements. It will be of interest to people who are working, or who would like to work, in a managerial role in the arts and cultural sectors.

The course will stimulate your understanding and develop your knowledge of arts and cultural management issues relevant to today’s ever changing working environment and is designed to equip you with the transferable skills necessary to work in different sectors of the arts. You will develop your knowledge of contemporary issues affecting the development of arts and cultural management and their relevance to daily practice. The course balances practice with theory to enable you to develop a broader and deeper understanding of the processes of arts and cultural management. You will be able to use modules, or the whole course, as part of your personal and professional development.



EXIT AWARDS: MA (180 credits)/PgDip (120 credits)/ PgCert (60 credits)
Delivery: At QMU and on placement
Single Modules: Register as an associate student to study some single modules in areas of interest

Duration: Full-time: 1 year; Part-time:2 years
Start date: September
Application deadline: The deadline for all overseas applicants who require a visa to study in the UK should apply no later than the 30th June 2013.
Teaching, learning and assessment: Teaching is comprised of a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, simulation exercises, field trips and projects.
The methods used vary from module to module. At the very heart of the learning process is the opportunity to undertake an industry placement of your choice. There is no limit to placement activity and it can be in an area of your own choice. Your performance on the course will be assessed by essays, reports, presentations and a dissertation or project (MA only).

Teaching hours and attendance: Each module which you study on-campus will require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Your attendance requirements at QMU will depend on which module you are studying and whether you are studying full or part-time.
Links with industry/professional bodies: The course is developed in co-operation with key national cultural agencies and other bodies with a strategic interest in the development of the arts and cultural sectors across Scotland and there are strong practical links between the cultural management course and many local and national organisations in the cultural industry sector. With a plethora of festivals, theatre companies, dance companies, museums and orchestras in and around Edinburgh - THE Festival city, and Scotland as a whole - has much to offer students on this course, including many work-based llearning and networking opportunities.
