This programme consists of mandatory units which include the
following study: communication and professional relationships with
children, young people and adults; schools as organisations
including types of schools, policies and procedures, and the wider
environment in which they operate; planning, delivering and
reviewing assessment strategies to promote and support learning
alongside the teacher; personal development and reflective
practice.
Optional units will focus on some of the following occupational
roles: Plan and deliver learning activities under the direction of
a teacher; Support literacy development; Support numeracy
development; Support delivery of the 14-19 curriculum, and lead an
extra-curricular activity.
The work based element of this course (minimum of 10.5hrs per week)
consists of a system of continuous assessment within the workplace,
and is used for performance related evidence supported by oral
questions and written work. Knowledge gained from study days
supports the evidence of performance. You must be employed in a
relevant childcare setting or actively doing regular voluntary work
(subject to conditions).
On successful completion you will have a qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning and level 1 Functional Skills in literacy and numeracy.
No formal qualifications are required however as an applicant you must demonstrate numeracy, literacy and verbal communication skills. (Support may be available for students who demonstrate a lack of ability in these areas).
Students can move forward to a Level 4 course e.g. Foundation Degree in Teaching Assistants or gain employment in a school form Reception Year to Year 11.
