English – BA (Honours)

On this degree you study literature, linguistics and creative writing in combination. You develop your understanding of literature from three complementary standpoints – those of the critic, the writer and the linguist.

You examine literature from the Renaissance period to the present and can study a wide range of literary genres, including works from the traditional literary canon and those outside it.

You explore recent developments in literary theory and creative practice, which challenge traditional ideas about literature. At the same time you follow core modules in English language, which develop your descriptive linguistic skills for studying literary language. There are also several other language options in areas such as language and gender, pragmatics and sociolinguistics.

You can expand your study range by opting to take up to five modules outside the course. You can also study abroad in Europe for one semester during the second year to pursue independent study.

You have the chance to improve your employability with work-based or work-related modules. Work-related activities on the course can include literary editing, journalism, and arts administration.
