Linking the business objectives to the individual's targets,
actions and project pecifications. Negotiating agreement between
organisational needs and individual capabilities. Reviewing,
rewarding and learning from past activity as part of a normal
management process. Identifying and planning to meet the
individual's development needs and assistance required from
managers.
Ensuring That Appraisal is a Positive, 2-Way Process:
Preparation and information for both appraiser and appraisee.
Structuring feedback, discussion and negotiation. The use of action
plans and reviews.
Skills Required in Appraisal:
Communication skills: questioning, guiding, controlling and
informing.
Negotiation skills: planning, investigating, purposing,
bargaining.
Development skills: reviewing, identifying needs, coaching,
mentoring.
Alternative Approaches:
360° systems. Forward appraisal. Bottom-up objective setting.
