Curriculum Area: Theology and Care

Religious Studies AS/A Level

Religious Studies covers two main areas – the Philosophy of Religion and selected themes in Luke’s Gospel. Students who enjoy debate and challenging ideas will find this course stimulating. Also, students who are interested in understanding Jesus’ teaching in the context of his day and looking at the reasons for his death at the hands of the Roman authorities will also enjoy the critical exploration of the facts.

Advanced Level (A2)

Students can progress to the full Advanced Level [A2] in the second year of study and the Units are as follows. Both exams at A2 are held in June

Unit 3 Developments: Further Philosophy of Religion and Themes in Luke’s Gospel Unit 4 Implications: Exploring a variety of religious and philosophical ideas in relation to human experience and existence

Methods of Teaching and Learning

The course is tutored by well-qualified staff who use a range of teaching methods – incorporating both group and individual. Students will be asked to do presentations, to do research, to develop their skills, as well as doing structured discussion + analysis of arguments. There are informed discussions in class and weekly written arguments.

Methods of Assessment

  • Unit 1: Answer 3 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Unit 2: Answer 1 question in 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  • Unit 3: Answer 3 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Unit 4: Answer 1 question in 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Resources

Resources for this subject include an excellent range of text books, theological literature in the library. Video and powerpoint presentations as well as thorough teaching resources provide much support for students of this course.

Progression

Religious Studies is valuable for students going on to any degree in course, as well as good training for a working career. It develops the ability to analyse and evaluate arguments and other perspectives concerning religion and culture.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSE’s at grade C or above, or the equivalent, from four subject areas including GCSE English. A good standard of essay writing is expected.
