This course will focus on an introduction to the new Primary National Programme Letters and Sounds

What is phonics?

Letters and Sounds /grapheme -to-phoneme correspondences

Overview of the phases

A typical synthetic phonics lesson

Sounds- environmental, instrumental, body, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice, blending and segmenting.

Teaching the alphabet and letter formation

Consonants and vowels

Resources for the teaching of phonics

Entry Qualification: This course is designed for anyone with young children of reading age , for nursery nurses and teaching assistants wishing to extend their knowledge and skills in the delivery of phonics.

Although no formal prior qualifications are necessary, candidates should have the minimum level of literacy. The minimum age of entry will normally be eighteen years

Course Format: Part time college certificate

Progression: To NCFE Level 2 or 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Employment as a teaching assistant in school
