The course is aimed at individuals who are interested in psychology, sociology and criminology, who enjoy working within a variety of academic studies.
Full-time and part time students take a variety of both core and choice modules in order to build up a programme of study which suits their own subject interest or future career plans. All students have a personal tutor who they can meet at least twice a semester to review progress and assist with any personal or academic problems. Each week study skills classes provide an opportunity to hone skills relevant to Higher Education.

At Year 1, modules include: Introduction to psychosocial studies;
Psychoanalysis of the self; Social science and society; Researching
social issues; Social and Developmental psychology; Issues in child
development and Social psychology; Comparing social lives;
Contemporary sociological issues.
During year 2 there are core modules in Contemporary social
psychology, Lifespan development, Individual and society. Students
also have several choice modules including: Health, social
divisions and inequalities, Deviance, social control and the
construction of crime, Violent Crime, and Knowledge and belief.
Third year students also have choice modules including Race, racism
and cultural identity; Issues in mental health; Gender relations;
Self and social change; Good and Evil ; Sexuality and social
control. There will also be a core Major Project module which
students need to undertake to achieve the Honours component of the
degree programme.
Students will be informed as to which core modules are and which
choice modules in more detail are during induction week.

Entry Requirements:
Interview required
- All applicants must have GCSE English at
grade C or above or equivalent
- 180 UCAS points consisting of at least 2 relevant A-Levels (1 at
grade C or above)
- National diploma with at least two units at merit level or
above
- Pass or above at Access level (with 3 units at merit or
above)
Mature students with equivalent qualifications or appropriate
employment experience may also be considered for an entry onto the
programme.
Assessment:
There are no final examinations at the end of the course, but some modules have an examination as part of their assessment. Other modes of assessment include presentations, essays and, in the third year the major project dissertation.
Progression from this course:
The psychosocial degree programme is thought to provide students with a variety of career paths. It is expected that some of the students graduating from the programme will consider career paths such as progress onto MA studies, social work, teacher training, FE tutoring and PGCE studies at the College of West Anglia. Students are also likely to consider careers within the Probation and Prison Service as a result of their criminology studies.
