This course is appropriate for students interested in working as chef within the hospitality industry. Functional skills (English, maths and IT) are also an important part of the course and the work produced for your course will offer you the greatest opportunity to develop these skills. For example, if you take part in a role play or discussion, you could be developing your communication skills which will improve your English. At least one functional skill will accompany your course at an appropriate level for you. Additional qualifications in food service may also be available.

Entry Requirements:

Interview required

2 GCSEs at grade C or above (including catering). Candidates must have completed the level 1 diploma qualification in hospitality at merit level. Further progression criteria include excellent attendance and attitude and completion of a progression assignment. Experience in the hospitality industry would be preferred. Over 19 students may meet the entry requirements through industry experience. All students will be interviewed.

Assessment:

Progress on the course is measured through a number of written assignments and short answer tests. Students will also have practical assessments. This qualification will be graded pass/merit/distinction.

Progression from this course:

Successful level 2 diploma students may progress to the level 3 diploma on achieving a merit grade.

Course Costs:

All students on full-time courses will need to pay a materials / resources fee. Details will be provided before enrolment. If you are under 19 on 31st August in the year you begin your programme, you will not have to pay tuition or registration fees for your course. For students aged 19 or over, there will be a tuition fee (depends on the course) for each year of the course as well as a registration fee (which includes exam fees). However, many students will be eligible for reduced fees and / or financial support towards the costs. Click here for detailed information. There is a start-up cost of approx £80 for the course, which will be used to provide specific items to help you achieve. There is also a requirement to wear uniform for practical classes. This uniform will be specified at interview and an order form provided. Uniform and knives will cost around £190. Students within our department will have a number of trips and visits including trade fairs which will be compulsory. These trips will be subsidised through the use of student tips, generated in the restaurant. Students will also have the opportunity to go on an overseas visit at an additional cost, this will not be compulsory.
