Intermediate Level Apprenticeship (ILA) in Construction - Trowel Occupations - Brickwork

This course is for those who wish to pursue a career in bricklaying.
The course is based on day release, 1 day per week at college. The rest of the week will be on site with the employer. The NVQ (or work based recorder) is a log of specific work carried out on site and can consist of reports, photographs, peer reports, drawings, diagrams etc. Site assessment visits will be carried out by tutors and the work based recorder will then be assessed in college.
The diploma provides the underpinning knowledge for the practical work as well as practical assessments of brick models in the college workshops. There are also unit tests throughout the 2 year course.

There is an end of 2nd year external on-line examination as well as
a health and safety examination, both of which must be passed
before the diploma is achieved. A one day training day will be held
for abrasive wheels and employment rights and responsibilities with
attendance certificated for both.
Key skills (or functional skills) will be delivered in designated
weeks, indicated on the college timetable.
Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) are an integrated part
of the course.
Additional support is available for those identified as requiring
extra help in order to achieve at these levels. This is arranged on
a 1:1 basis.

- NVQ Level 2 in Trowel Occupations
- Diploma in Brickwork Level 2 (technical certificate).
- Functional skills in English and maths at level 1 (or the
equivalent key skill)
- Abrasive wheels certificate

Entry Requirements:
Interview required
You will be assessed for your potential to
achieve the apprenticeship. The assessment will depend upon the
level and range of activities you will be undertaking in the
workplace.
There are no specific academic requirements, however, you may need
to undergo an initial assessment of your English and maths skills
in which you are required to be working at or towards level 1.
At the start of the apprenticeship programme you will need to be
employed by a suitable and appropriate employer for at least 16
hours a week. You also need to have been a resident in the EU for
at least 3 years.
Commitment and motivation are necessary to complete the course.
Assessment:
On site assessments, college assessments, portfolio of evidence and external exams.
Progression from this course:
It is possible to progress to an advanced level apprenticeship which consists of a further year of training. This will be discussed individually with the candidate, the employer and tutors towards the end of the 2nd year.

Course Costs:
There are currently no fees payable by young people on Apprenticeship programmes. Fees may be payable by the employer where the candidate is 19 or older. Details available on request.
