The construction department has over 30

given a high profile to this part of its provision. The course
offers a flexible, modular driven programme, which provides
students with high quality learning experiences. Our programme
directly services the needs of local and national contractors, thus
enabling the department to maintain its links with the roots of the
industry. Technologists in the form of builders are in great
demand, locally, nationally and internationally, to carry out
highly skilled and professional jobs.
The course is divided into 2 areas:
Mandatory core units:
- Design principles and application (15 credits)
- Science and materials (15 credits)
- Group project (20 credits)
- Health, safety and welfare (15 credits)
Specialist units:
- Construction and maintenance of buildings (15 credits)
- Technology of complex buildings (15 credits)
- Measurement, tendering and estimating (15 credits)
- Site surveying procedures (15 credits)
- Law and contract (15 credits)
Units may vary subject to requirements.
This is a part-time course taught over 2 years and will involve day
release comprising of 34 weeks per year.
End Qualification:
Level 4 Diploma in Construction (HNC)
Entry Requirements:
Interview required
Candidates should be employed in the
construction industry.
All applicants must have GCSE English at grade C or above or
equivalent
Applicants must possess 1 (or more) of the following:
- BTEC National in Construction
- Craft qualification plus work experience/bridging units
- Work experience in a construction area.
Mature applicants will be considered.
Assessment:
With the majority of subjects studied, success is monitored by the process of continuous assessment either through in-course assignments or phase tests. All core units must be achieved together with a minimum of 55 credits from specialist units.
Progression from this course:
Progression from the level 4 diploma (HNC) to a level 5 diploma (HND) and top-up degree is encouraged and this route has always proved popular for students and their sponsors. Individuals may join as a student or associate member of certain professional institutions e.g. CIAT, CIOB or RICS.
