Pilates is a low impact (no jumping or running) exercise based around a series of exercises taught both standing and in laying positions on a mat. It consists of slow controlled flowing movements that strengthen the core muscles. By strengthening the core muscles a person can stabilize and support the spine better, improving posture and improving daily activities.

Pilates helps bring mind and body together by focusing on concentration, balance, precision and breathing. A great sense of well-being can be experienced from taking part in a Pilates class.

The aims and objectives of the session are to provide a safe and effective mat based Pilates class to mixed ability beginners. No previous experience is necessary. The session will involve a warm up consisting of the Set up and Mobility exercises and incorporates the principles of Pilates to prepare both mind and body while mobilising the joints. The main session will include a combination of strengthening and mobilisation exercises with appropriate release stretches. The session will end with relaxation.

End Qualification:

There is no specific qualification but a college certificate is available if requested by the tutor.

No interview required

Assessment:

Learners will be involved in completing a statement outlining their reasons for attending the course. Learners will be assessed on their progress in achieving these objectives. This will take the form of regular tutor observation and monitoring of progress against the original objectives set out for attending the course.

Progression from this course:

There will be opportunity to progress onto other similar or associated courses on successful completion. The possibilities will be discussed by the tutor at an appropriate stage. Please be sure to ask your tutor.

- Wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in
