Sound Engineer Diploma – Full Time

TRW Sound Engineering & Music Production Diploma Course 1 & 2

The Sound Engineer Diploma is for those who are seriously looking at sound engineering, music production, sound design or other audio studio related occupations as a life long vocation.

The TRW Sound Engineer Diploma is a full time course. The course length is 1 academic year or 3 terms similar to a college or university, and includes the content from all the TRW audio & sound engineering courses as well as the music technology & music production courses plus a lot more with additional practical periods amounting to 16 hours or more per week (up to 40 hours/week if required).

This course is designed to prepare you to be able to work in the recording industry as a sound engineer or set up your own recording studio. The emphasis is on practical work.

At the end of the course you will be assessed for the TRW Music Technology & Sound Engineer Diploma. This will be based not only on the quality of the work presented, but also on your general attitude towards the tasks and challenges you will undoubtedly face from time to time during your training.

The recording industry does not fit into the mold of other industries. The hours are erratic and can be very long, the general environment tends to be unorthodox and stress levels can get high. The ability to work in a team is essential. Motivation, drive, enthusiasm, flexibility and reliability are paramount.

Graduates from this course have worked with members & ex members of the Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, AC/DC and David Bowie’s band!

UK residents who successfully achieve the sound engineer diploma will then be found placements in studios for work experience.

Entry requirements.

There are no formal entry requirements other than a reasonable command of English. No musical skills are required. We teach everything from the very beginning and assume no previous experience or knowledge from our students even if they have had some. This is because a lot of people in this field are self taught which often leads to gaping holes in their knowledge and understanding.

The Sound Engineer Diploma Course Structure.

See the Sound Engineer Diploma Course Details page for more information.

There are 3 parts to this course:

Part 1 – Duration 8 weeks:
The Music Production & Sound Engineer Foundation Course on Tuesdays between 14:00 and 17:00 hrs.
Practical periods & Sound Design module: Wednesdays 11:00 to 17:00 hrs and Thursdays or Fridays. 11:00 to 17:00 hrs.

During part 1, some of your practical sessions consist of assisting in actual recording sessions with an experienced sound engineer in order for you to gain a better understanding and experience of the requirements of a studio sound engineer. As this is also a working recording studio the times and days of the practical sessions may occasionally change at short notice just as they would do in any other professional recording studio therefore a certain amount of flexibility is necessary from the students.

Part 2 – Duration 16 weeks:
The sound engineering & music technology course is set out as follows:
Monday classes 11:00 to 16:30 and Tuesday classes 11:00 to 13:30 with a minimum of 2 x bookable 3 hour weekday practical sessions.

Part 3 – Duration 8 weeks:
Final period to finish your projects. No more classes but access to the main studio or individual workstations as well as necessary individual tuition will be provided. Final interview and assessment on completion of all projects.

Why Study the Sound Engineer Diploma at the Recording Workshop?

One of the most important features of this course is that there are only 4 to 5 people per session, which means you will get to use all the equipment first hand.
It appears that many other schools, colleges or learning centers have somewhere between 10 and 30 people per course. “I have taught in further education colleges and it was a nightmare. There were about 25 students trying to get access to the mixing desk. The class was also held back by some students who were there because they could not think of anything better to do. They were not really interested which brought the whole class down…” says Jose Gross the founder of The Recording Workshop. “I like the personal approach. Small classes, lots of practice on the equipment. Exchange of ideas between people. I am still learning even now from my students because they have unprejudiced ideas about how to do things which I am always struggling with myself.”

Another distinguishing feature of The Recording Workshop is that it is located slap bang in the middle of one of the most densely populated recording studio areas in the world. There are something like 50 recording studios in about 3 blocks of buildings! A lot of them belong to world class acts. You will frequently see famous faces in the nearby cafe or just walking down the corridor in this building or down the street. This makes it ideal for making contacts and work opportunities.

Sound engineering and music technology cross over a lot. control surfaces like this one enable you to mix your track with a computer.Working with live instruments such as guitars is an important part of the sound engineering course

At the end of the course the work will be assessed for the TRW Music Technology & Sound Engineering Diploma. EU residents who meet the requirements will then be found placements in studios for work experience.
