Why study with us?

Customer loyalty and increasing market share along with getting the most out of your staff is key to business development. Research has been carried out to investigate whether there is any link between economic success and effective equality and diversity practice. A large-scale study (EC, 2005) found a demonstrable correlation between successful private sector businesses and a commitment to diversity.

The way in which the case for diversity is made may vary significantly between businesses / organisations. For instance, the demographic case in relation to the ethnicity of staff or the customer base may have more impact in a multi-cultural metropolitan area than in a rural area, where both recruit staff or customers from their local communities. On the other hand, the social and moral case will have a similar impact. When they are in a small minority staff or customers may require more support from a business or organisation than when they are in either a larger minority or a majority.

Opportunities to maximise business interactions are explored in the context of diversity.

Course summary

With increased competition for market share and customer loyalty, getting diversity right can add value to your business. This course demonstrates how diversity matters and is designed to provide an overview of diversity legislation and best practice and looks in detail at how diversity can improve management decisions and support effective recruitment and selection. It is:

  • Highly relevant to the staff / customer experience - not least in the delivery of public sector services (as a contractor as well as in-house).
  • Supporting the business and organisation to attract and retain good quality people (staff / customers / clients / funders) including fair and legal recruitment practices
  • Key in embedding a culture of the management team to achieving an inclusive, flexible diversity friendly environment

Business owners and managers may want to assure themselves that staff within have undergone appropriate training, and indeed to undertake it themselves to obtain first-hand experience of it. This is not so much an issue of compliance as of behaviour and attitudes that, often in quite subtle ways, affect the culture of a business or organisation.

The managers determine the culture of the business and therefore, in all activities, policies or practices the key themes should be explicit:

  • Valuing individuals and the talent/potential they have.
  • Respecting people’s differences (not treating everyone the same).
  • Making these differences work for the individual and the business / organisation, including business opportunities.
  • Ensuring policies, recruitment and other decisions are based on potential and skills.
  • Employer of Choice - recognised and celebrated externally - getting diversity right will enhance the customer base, improve customer/client satisfaction and support repeat or enhanced business opportunities.
