This short programme provides students with the required level of knowledge and understanding to undertake a professional career in policing.

Entry to the police will be via one of the pre-join entry routes available through participating forces within England and Wales. Once a student has attained the award they will be eligible to apply to participating forces subject to their individual entry requirements and selection process.

On successful completion of the course you will have developed:

  • theoretical knowledge and understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a police officer.
  • an understanding of current police legislation, policy and guidelines.
  • knowledge of differing police models and theories of investigation.
  • an ability to reflect on previous experience and draw on the potential application of policing practices.
  • your personal, academic and professional skills.
  • the ability to work independently in an academic context.

This programme will equip students with the necessary qualification (CKP equivalent) to apply to join the police service. The course will provide students with knowledge and understanding of current legislation, policy and practice.

This qualification is set to become the minimum pre-entry requirement for a career in the Police service for applicants with no previous experience of working within the wider police family.

The course also equips you with the requirements to continue your studies on other policing programmes offered by the university.

Resources and facilities

In seeking to develop knowledge and understanding a range of learning and teaching methods will be utilised. Lectures will be the principle means of imparting key knowledge, however students will be expected to conduct self-study through problem based learning, case study work, presentations and group discussions.

The delivery team comprise of a range of staff including academic staff and ex-police officers with experience of initial police learning and development training.

While desirable for applicants to be able to demonstrate competency in English Language and have evidence of study at GCSE level, or equivalent, it is not necessary. Applicants who do not meet this standard minimum entry requirement will be accepted on the evidence of underpinning study, demonstration of the ability to benefit, plus any academic requirements necessary to satisfy the criteria of professional, statutory and regulatory body.

While the police require no formal academic qualification, applicants should demonstrate they have a prospect of successfully completing the module. Applicants may be required to demonstrate basic competencies and skills via prior experiential learning and/or such diagnostic assessment procedures as are deemed appropriate.

Claims for advanced standing via accredited prior learning will be considered under University of Cumbria APEL regulations and procedures.

Modules

Students will study two 20 credit modules at level 4: Introduction to Policing and Legislation, Policy and Guidelines.

Course summary

Along with a level of knowledge and understanding this short police 'pre-join' programme aims to provide students with some of the key skills required to undertake the role of a police constable. These will include decision making, investigative skills interview technique and problem-solving.

In addition to this students will acquire a range of academic skills and independent study skills. Students will be supported through their development by a range of lectures, practical scenarios, case studies and problem-solving exercises.

These key professional skills which are essential to the role of a police constable are also beneficial and transferable to other professions and for continued study with the university.
